Power Statements
I am flexible. For example, in my previous custodial position there was a hiring freeze with no one to fill in for certain responsibilities. I volunteered to rework my schedule so that I could help meet the needs of the company and allow my fellow employees to focus on their daily tasks.
o
I can handle conflict. In my last job, whenever a fellow teammate would have a disagreement I would listen first, decide if I can handle the situation by myself, and then determine whether or not to involve management in the discussion. I was able to resolve many situations.
o
I can work under tough conditions. My last job was a graveyard shift position and conflicted with my daytime activities. I was able to make it work in a way that didn't inhibit my home life.
o
The quality of my work shows. In my last occupation, I received numerous recognition awards from my employers with words of thanks from the customers stating how they noticed a visible change when I signed on as custodian.
o
I am responsible and reliable. In all my jobs I make a point of showing up on time. In my last job, I was only late for work one day in all the years I've worked there. If given a task, it will be completed.
o
I perfect my work method. During my last job, I would develop and implement better strategies for getting work done more efficiently. I was able to pass on my ideas to fellow employees.

Journal of Writing
4-26: John Thompson’s spoke to the class about I-COMM and how it can benefit students in Communications. He stressed the importance of being skillful in more than one area. Our employability is directly related to our ability. He spoke on how experience is essential to being successful. He also advised us to become good writers. He said every job will require good writing.
5-3: Lane Williams spoke about news and journalism. He showed the changes to the field in our modern day due to the internet. Journalism is important to society. It’s the reporter’s job to find the most relevant information and make it interesting to the reader. Williams gave us internet links to various journalism sites to give us an idea of news in today’s society.
5-10: Caryn Esplin discussed the value of majoring in Visual Communications. She said we need to be efficient, skilled, and versatile in this field. This emphasis covers a lot of different jobs. Being good with computers to edit photos and make ads looks good in a job interview. The job requires creativity and a good sense of what works in media.
5-17: Brian Howard gave us an in-depth look into the video production field. There are many fields within the video production world. Television employs many people in the entertainment and news industry. The internet is slowly replacing television’s functions, but the jobs in recording video for it are still the same. The most important asset to making it big in the video world is experience. There is much to learn and many opportunities.
5-24: Michael Cannon elaborated on the function of public relations. PR is a mediator for a company and the public. Cannon related to us Marston’s four steps for public relations which are research, action, communication, and evaluation. I don’t think any other field in the Communications major requires more communication skills than PR. PR influences the public and helps form the image of your organization. Cannon said it is important to act and not just rely on words to communicate. A job in public relations requires a lot of talent.
5-31: Tyler Christensen gave us the rundown on the Academic Discovery Center. He gave us an idea of what it takes to graduate with a major in Communications. I had never heard of the Grad Plan Lab before Christensen’s presentation. He explained the different options I have when it comes to minors and clusters. He also made it clear what resident credits are and how they apply to the bachelor’s degree.
6-7: I missed the presentation about advertising by Jeff Hochstrasser due to my absence.
6-14: Shane Cole helped us to understand about copyright laws and how we can avoid plagiarism. It can be easy to break copyright laws without being aware of it. Fair use gives us a chance to use other peoples’ intellectual property without impeding on their rights. Copyright laws can also protect us when we are making our own products in the world of media.
6-21: Natalie Whittaker explained internships and the steps necessary to obtain them so we can graduate. She also discussed how an internship can help to gain future employment. The experience is good for us, but the most important point is we show employers we are dedicated to our craft and are capable of performing well.
